Helping babies breastfeed longer!

I love reading these on breastfeeding message boards:

I hope that this is appropriate in this forum (if not please feel free to move it where it should be), but I wanted to take a moment and say a big "Thanks!" to Lori (www.lorisnursingnecklaces.com) for the nursing necklace she made for me last week. I injured my right thumb just before Thanksgiving slicing apples and nursing my son suddenly became much more challenging as his favorite thing to do while he nurses has always been to grasp the thumb in front of his nose. Nursing sessions had turned into wrestling bouts as I tried desperately to keep his hands away from my injured thumb. I finally remembered seeing comments about Lori's nursing necklaces here in Ovuland. I sent her an email and she was absolutely wonderful! She put a necklace together in primary colors, personalized with Max's name, and had it in the mail to me the same day. Since it arrived nursing is so much easier... If Max is alert and graspy, the colors and shapes really grab his attention. If he's sleepy and ready to nod off he holds onto the necklace as he nurses down. If he does get interested in the bandaged thumb I can distract him with the necklace.I can't fully express how much stress, hassle and pain this necklace has saved me in the last week and a half. I highly recommend them for anyone with a nurser who likes to pinch, pull, grab...DH loves it too. He calls it Max's Mommy Beads and was amazed at how well they work.Anyway, my heartfelt thanks, again, to Lori!

My dd has been very distracted during nursing and it takes a long time to feed her and if we are out sometimes she will hardly eat til we get home. So today I got my nursing necklaces from Lori. I ordered 2 because I couldn't decide between colors. Anyway, I tried it out and dd loved it and so did I. She nursed for much longer without being distracted. Now I can't wait to see if it will work while we are out. Anyway, I just wanted to say I love mine and give a for Lori's nursing necklaces!Joanna

I swear I get all weepy reading these.

Nursing necklaces inspired by: A Lord of the Rings flag, and Strawberry Shortcake

Sometimes, I am asked to create necklace from certain information. Those are by FAR the most difficult ones, but also the most rewarding to create. Here are a few:

A friend emailed me saying she wanted me to make a nursing necklace for a friend of hers who was really into the Lord of the Rings and asked if I could make a nursing necklace to match.

I Immediately thought of this flag.

And made her this necklace

Cait's birthday is on October 8th. I would like two necklaces for the two young ones attending.
The theme is Strawberry Shortcake. Lots of pink. Cait's tastes are much more
frilly than mine. C'est la vie.

So, I went searching the internet for Strawberry Shortcake and friends! There really is a StrawberryShortcake.com and that is where I found Orange Twist

and

Custard the cat and Pupcake the dog

I put them together and created this necklace.

Nursing Necklaces inspired by: A medieval day of reconciliation, Mardi Gras, and Italy

Sometimes, I am asked to create necklace from certain information. Those are by FAR the most difficult ones, but also the most rewarding to create. Here are a few:

I haven't a clear idea of what I would like for the necklace but here
are a few (helpful I hope) pieces of information:

DD2 is called Loveday which is a medieval name given to children born on
a "loveday" or day of reconciliation and dispute settlement. It's more or
less confined to Cornwall in the South West of England now, and is also used
sometimes by Quaker families as there was a famous woman in the 17th
Century who took the Quaker message round the south west and her name was
Loveday. We are Quakers! I like classic rather than cute things.

This one came straight from the sense of medieval royality and chivalry. Purple was the color of royalty and no one else could wear it, so I knew I had to use purple, the green is for the fields, dark blue for the skies in England, and gold for the riches of the castles.

I would like to order a nursing necklace from you and I live in New Orleans, any ideas?

I found this description of the Madri Gras colors:
The traditional colors of Mardi Gras are purple (symbolic of justice), green (symbolic of faith) and gold (symbolic of power). The accepted story behind the original selection of these colors originates from 1872 when the Grand Duke Alexis Romanoff of Russia visited New Orleans. It is said that the Grand Duke came to the city in pursuit of an actress named Lydia Thompson. During his stay, he was given the honor of selecting the official Mardi Gras colors by the Krewe of Rex...thus, did these colors also become the colors of the House of Romanoff. The 1892 Rex Parade theme ("Symbolism of Colors") first gave meaning to the representation of the official Mardi Gras colors. Interestingly, the colors of Mardi Gras influenced the choice of school colors for the Lousiana arch-rival colleges, Louisiana State University and Tulane University. Whe LSU was deciding on its colors, the stores in New Orleans had stocked-up on fabrics of purple, green and gold for the upcoming Mardi Gras Season. LSU, opting for purple and gold, bought a large quantity of the available cloth. Tulane purchased much of the only remaining color...green (Tulane's colors are green and white).

Hi Lori!
I'd like to order one more nursing necklace! My aunt just had a baby and she is nursing so I'd like to surprise her with one. She lives in Italy (military) so you can send it to me and I'll get it to her. Your necklaces are so wonderful. I've been showing Jimmy's off to all my family and friends, and have given your name and website to several moms.

I knew the national sport was soccer and the colors of the Italian flag were red, green and white.

How to use a nursing necklace

Some babies take to the nursing necklace right away, but like any other tool, it takes other some time to get used it. When you first get the necklace home, you may want to let your baby explore it while you have it in your hands, letting him or her touch it and look at it carefully. After a few minutes, try to use it while nursing.

If you are using this necklace to help with a distractible baby, and your baby pops off and will only play with the necklace, remove the necklace and continue nursing, try the necklace again at a later nursing session. Many mothers have found that their baby will begin to associate the nursing session with the necklace and concentrate on nursing longer because of it.

If you are using this necklace to help with pinching or twiddling, it may help to place the baby’s hand around the necklace each time s/he tries to pinch or pull at you.

The key from what other moms have reported back, it to associate the necklace with nursing only. By limiting your baby’s exposure to the necklace, it remains new and interesting to your baby.

As confident as I am about all of my products, everyone should be aware of the possibility of rare, unforeseen accidents. No child should be left unsupervised with any type of jewelry because of the risk of possible strangulation or choking. Use of a nursing necklace should be restricted to a wakeful adult wearing the necklace while feeding the child. The child should not be wearing a necklace or any jewelry while in a car seat, crib, bouncy seat, etc. Never let a child go to sleep wearing jewelry. When you are not wearing your jewelry, never leave it where a child can get access to it.

Here is an idea a mom shared with me:

Basically - right now when I am not using it during nursing, I keep it in
a 12oz plastic bottle (like a big plastic Snapple bottle with a wide mouth)
and the baby plays with this as a big noisy toy. He like to shake it and
see and hear the necklace bouncing around inside the bottle. Then when its time to nurse, I open the bottle in front of him and say "do you want milk?" and as I pull out the necklace he starts to giggle excitedly. He has also started laughing excitedly when I put on the necklace in general - with out being asked if he wants milk first... so I think he is now also associating the act of putting the necklace on with nursing.

Then during nursing, he grabs the necklace with his free hand (he usually sticks his other hand behind my back) and shakes it to hear the beads rattle together... or sometimes he just looks at the beads. I am starting to tell him what colors and shapes the beads are when he fingers them...
And on occasion, because he is teething, sometimes after nursing I might let him mouth some of the big beads - but not often and only for very very brief periods and only while I am holding or still wearing the necklace.

More than just for nursing!

You made two necklaces for my daughter Anna Mae. She is still too young for me to wear them around my neck (not to the twiddling stage yet). I did want you to see how much she enjoys them though hanging above her changing table. I spin the parrot so the necklaces move and she smiles and smiles and laughs as she stares at them. I'm glad I got two of them so when I do start wearing one she still has one to look at. Thank you so much for them. Sally

Charlotte

just wanted to share these with you. You have my permission to use them for your site or advertising if you'd like. Kelton loves his necklace. It's awesome for church. Which ever one of us is holding him in church will wear it and it keeps him occupied! I'm the only one of my friends with children right now, but as they start having babies, I'll definately be purchasing more necklaces! My husband does have a few cousins that are pregnant!

Lori,
This is the best pic I could get of us with our necklaces. Walker would not nurse with his Daddy there with a camera. They both love their necklaces. Walker (now 11 months) loves to put his on himself. Will slept with his a couple of nights. I’ll try another time for a better picture.
Thanks,
Lauri
